Tea parties aren't just for 7-year-old girls and their stuffed animals.  These mock tea parties are perhaps more famous than their real-life counterparts, but a tea party is a great way to have a casual but friendly gathering.  Tea parties are great for meeting new neighbors, as well as for getting to know the families of new co-workers or playmates.

Decoration & Music

To keep a tea party casual, you want to make your decorating as subtle as possible.  Pick a room that is well-decorated, and try not to dress it up too much.  Fresh-cut flowers in vases can really liven up any space without being distracting.  For music, gentle piano sonatas, even played on CD, can set a gentle and welcoming ambiance.

Meal

Obviously, no tea party is complete without tea.  If your tea party is a regular affair, you can use it as an occasion to sample a variety of teas.  From Ceylon to Darjeeling, Sancha to Lapsang Souchon, Orange Pekoe to Moroccan Mint, there are literally hundreds of unique teas on the market.  Serve tea with mild cookies like Madelines or shortbreads for a delightful afternoon.

Activities

The ideal activity for a tea party is a civil conversation.  If you're introducing strangers, you'll want to make sure you have enough topics of conversation to keep things polite.  Before the party, come up with a list of things to talk about, so that you can be a great hostess and smooth over any awkward pauses with charming discussion.
